My Africa site discusses the sexual life of ethnic groups in Tanzania
A chief instructor (Bimkubwa:great lady) supervises preparations for vaginal distension in the first night . Sexual instructions are given and obscene songs are practiced. “Vaginal” distension is practiced. The hymen is not ruptured. Girls are made familiar with the facts of sexual intercourse by the application of an egg. They are taught the motions of the sexual act. With red inumbati powder they are taught about the menses.Boys are circumcised, and a taboo on sexual intercourse rests upon the boys until they are healed. At the rite, boys are told about sexual purity, sexual disease through impurity and about menstruation using symbolism . This would occur at ages nine to sixteen.A clay phallic object is used in defloration at the end of chiputu. Instructions are given by means of song and explicit clay figurines including themes of defloration, conception, orgasmic timing, and intercourse taboos.”
As we see sexuality is far from being taboo in many parts of the continent. There is more than basic knowledge about sex and all that it encompasses on a social, cultural, physiological and marital level.
The question that comes to mind is where does this intrinsic knowledge combines/merges with urban sexual lifestyle and what does it create ?
